Renovation of Santiago Bernabéu Stadium

By: Joseph Levien

Santiago Bernabéu Stadium has been the home for Real Madrid since 1947. Over the years, it has been renovated a few times. It was renovated in 1982 and 2001. Over the past decade or so the stadium was in dire need of a renovation. In 2020, the stadium began a 525 million-dollar renovation to help modernize it. The project was initially slated to begin in 2017 but was delayed a couple years and began in 2019. The renovation's goals were to add additional seating, to add larger corridors, install a new roof, new luxury spaces, new shops, new seats and rooms, and a new playing surface. The new seats include additional capacity and new luxury suites to improve gameday and event experience. The larger corridors will allow for a better flow of foot traffic and also allows the stadium to be used for other purposes. The new roof will allow for fans to stay dry during gamedays and will also allow for the stadium to trap sound in to make it louder during matches. The new rooms can be used for conferences and conventions. The new playing surface also is able to fold up and go underneath the stadium so that a different surface can be put down for other events. This allows basketball games and concerts to be held at the stadium to help bring in addititional revenue. All of these additions and renovations will allow for the stadium to have an improved gameday experience while also allowing the stadium to be used every day of the year.
This renovation allows the stadium to be not only of the best in Europe, but the whole world. It captures both the European feel of a stadium but also takes on a modern American look. It also allows the stadium to be used for 365 days a year instead of the typical 40 matches that may be held at a stadium during a given year. Do you think this will revolutionize how stadiums are built in Europe?

  1. The renovation of Santiago Bernabéu Stadium is a really cool example of a new modern stadium. The renovation signifies a shift, transcending its traditional function as a football venue to become a multifaceted entertainment hub capable of hosting events throughout the year. As a result, it stands to set new benchmarks in stadium design and functionality, setting a precedent for future developments in the realm of sports infrastructure, especially in Europe. Do you think this will prompt other European countries to follow in their lead, and if they do, do you think fans will appreciate and use it like Americans do (getting dinner during games, shopping, etc)?

    1. Thanks for the response Kelsey. I think owners will continue to realize the value of having a stadium that can be used 365 days a year instead of the 40 or so match days. I think fans will appreciate it because it makes the overall gameday experience more pleasurable for fans. I think some of the older fans may have some objections to it but it also might attract new fans as there will be more to do. For example, the shopping center that is planned to could allow someone to spend the whole day in the area instead of only two hours for the game.

  2. My first weekend in Spain, I went to Madrid. My friends and I knew we wanted to go see a Real Madrid game. We got to Santiago Bernabéu stadium and it was gorgeous. Being that up close to Bernabéu was amazing. It was very easy to get around the stadium and to get to our seats. The stadium was very beautiful and the function of the stadium. This stadium will have the ability to bring on bigger events rather than just Football. There is talks for a big UFC event to happen in Bernabéu which would be a great experience. I think this would prompt other European countries to renovate their stadiums.

I agree I think a lot of the older stadiums will undergo renovations to become multipurpose stadiums that can be used 365 days a year instead of the 40 or so match days a year.

It is amazing to read and see how the upgrades to the stadium will enhance the gameday experience with many new amendities. The improved facilities will be perfect for other events and the stadium is now extremely versatile. There will be events held year-round and this should keep the town and city vibrant and active during match days and non match days. 5. I think that this was an extremely smart move by Real Madrid. Not only will this be the nicest stadium in Europe, but it also offers so many more ways for Real Madrid to make money outside of soccer. The retractable floor and roof systems are extremely helpful in doing so as they can hold events like concerts, conventions, other sporting games, and more. Real Madrid outdid themselves with this stadium and I can't wait to see it in full effect.

  6. I also wrote my post about the Santiago Bernabeu, while yours goes more into the physical sides of the renovation and mine looks more into fan engagement and emotion. I think this is a great post and is very forward thinking for Real Madrid, in the sense of new seating and retractable roof. I thought I would compare and contrast our posts. Yours as I said definitely dives into physical improvements of the stadium, showing how the renovation can make the gameday experience. In contrast, my post emphasizes the emotional connection fans have with the Santiago Bernabéu, talking about it as a place where history and emotion intersect. While both of them talk generally about the positives of renovation. I feel as if this post was very insightful for me and helps me better understand the physical and technical benefits of the renovation where mine looked mostly into how it kept fans engaged. Really enjoyed reading this post!!

  7. I am super excited to see how this new stadium project plans to maximize its financial success in terms of providing a venue for events outside of Real Madrid football. I think this could be an example for how to maximize the potential use of a stadium if done properly. I’m curious if you have any additional information as to how the stadium will be used for other purposes (concerns, farmers markets, etc) and how that will help pay off the investment and generate a profit!

    1. Thanks for the response! They are planning a UFC event there and maybe an NFL game in 2 years. I could see them hosting an NBA game there. I think this is possible because of the moveable playing surface. These are examples of different that can be hosted at the new stadium.

  8. The new Santiago Bernabéu Stadium sounds like it is going to be unreal. I hope that someday I might get to experience a game inside this new luxurious stadium. I think it is important for the rest of the world though because teams that need to renovate their stadiums in the future can look at this as a sort of model for what they should do. Stadiums are becoming so complex and modernized these days with newest technology and features which I think is exciting because it is a wonder to take in.

  9. The Santiago Bernabéu Stadium's renovation sets a new standard for stadium design worldwide. With modern features like larger corridors, a new roof, and flexible playing surfaces, it enhances both the gameday experience and the venue's versatility for year round events. This innovative approach may influence future stadium construction in Europe, emphasizing adaptability and maximizing usage beyond sports events. This a very normal concept in America. Most stadiums are used for hockey and basketball, they are able to change it very quickly.

  11. (Samantha Talt) The renovations to the stadium were a great business move for the Real Madrid team. Not only will these advancements draw in more fans, but the new features and amenities will encourage so many people worldwide to visit the stadium. With this, as a club with such a large fan base and engagement, the investment in luxury suites and seating will 100% be widely utilised and profitable for the club. It is also exciting to see how these stadiums will be utilized for other events.
