In 2007 Valencia CF began construction for a new stadium named Nou Mestalla. The renovation was supposed to cost 300 million dollars and planned to have a capacity of around 80, 000 people. The plan included building a shopping center near the stadium to help rejuvenate the area. The project was supposed to be done for the 2010 season. However, they ended up abandoning the project.

They abandoned the project due to financial hardships caused by the financial crisis in 2008. As a result of this, they had to abandon a half-built stadium that they had put 100 million dollars into. The half-built stadium still stands today and no one knows what to do with it. There have been many plans to continue building the stadium. There have also been plans to complete it with a smaller capacity. However, the concrete has rotted and is no good. There have also been plans to knock it down.

In 2030 the World Cup is coming to Spain and some stadiums need to be built to host the event. Valencia residents and fans are hoping they are given funding to complete the stadium so it can be used for this World Cup, however, this seems unlikely as the stadium is falling apart.

What do you think should be done with the stadium? Do you think they should receive funding to complete it or do you think they should knock it down?

  1. I think they should knock down the stadium. They did invest a lot of money into the stadium, but if the foundation is no good, theres no point in continuing the project. I think they should receive money to start up a new project for a new stadium for when the world cup comes to Spain. It is unfortunate that the stadium couldn't be built, but I think it is time to move on.

  2. It's disheartening to see the abandoned Nou Mestalla, a half-built monument to unfulfilled dreams. While completing the stadium for the 2030 World Cup would undoubtedly be a source of pride for Valencia, the practical challenges, such as the rotted concrete, seem insurmountable. As a fan, it's a tough pill to swallow, but perhaps it's time to consider more realistic alternatives. The funds allocated for completing the Nou Mestalla could potentially be redirected towards community development projects, and in the spirit of rejuvenation, a new, more modest stadium with sustainable materials could be considered. It's essential to weigh the sentimental value against the practicality of the situation and make decisions that ensure a lasting legacy for Valencia CF and the community.

  3. The situation with the Nou Mestalla stadium presents a difficult dilemma. While completing the stadium could provide a venue for the 2030 World Cup and potentially revive the area, the extent of its deterioration and the high costs involved definitely create a lot of concerns. It may be more practical to consider alternatives like maybe demolishing the structure and using the land for other community needs or redevelopment projects. The decision should weigh the pros and cons of completing the stadium against its potential benefits and costs to the community. In my opinion creating a better stadium is always a good investment because it will last for years, and football is so big in Spain people would not be opposed to it.

  4. I agree with what most people have said previously. I do think it's time to consider more realistic alternatives for the stadium. With the foundation no longer being great I think it would cost even more than they think to redo it and try and have it ready. I think that of course a stadium would bring a lot of money in to the city but I think it's important to consider alternative use for the big chunk of land. In the long run if they go through with the stadium reconstruction I believe it will bring in more money to the city but I think they should begin to look into other alternatives. I think if they get help funding the stadium they truly need to outweigh the pros and cons.
